Futon Mattress Care and Maintenance

Futon Mattress Care and Maintenance

A futon mattress has to be taken care of properly. It needs the same care and maintenance that any item requires. Hence, you need to clean the mattress once in a while.

Stumped with proper methods on how to clean a futon mattress? This article will tell you what to do, from dealing with stains to rotating the mattress.

Taking Away Stains

Let’s face it, staining can happen, particularly if the futon is used frequently. To maintain its pristine appearance, make sure to deal with the stains right away. Do not allow them to linger.

Whenever a spill happens, you have to take the liquid or solid off of the surface. Blot the stain with a clean rag or cloth. Keep in mind not to rub it in since it will cause the stain to expand.

Following a blotting, change the soiled rag or cloth with a new one that was moistened with water. Put a teaspoon of gentle laundry detergent right on the stain and rub it lightly with the moistened cloth in order to get rid of it. Rinse out the detergent with a clean rag or cloth moistened with lukewarm water.

There is another way to take care of staining, though. Get rid of it by making use of a laundry stain remover spray. Remember not to douse the whole area with the spray and follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully.

Rinse out the stain remover with a cloth moistened with lukewarm water. Let the treated area dry completely before using.

Airing the Mattress

Futon mattresses are hefty and a little cumbersome but you have to air the item out every once in a while in order to keep them odor-free. The futon mattress takes in moisture like sweat and humidity in the air so allowing them to dry outdoors is recommended.

If you have a porch railing, you can rest the item over it. Or you can prop the mattress up on the backs of a few chairs.

After an hour, you have to flip the mattress over and air the untreated side of the mattress. In case of bad weather, you can still air the mattress by letting it lean to one side against a table or chair inside the house in a room that has excellent ventilation. You can turn a fan on to boost air flow as well.

An important step in keeping your futon mattress clean is to vacuum it frequently each month to prevent accumulation and infestation of dust and dust mites. If you fold the mattress whenever you vacuum, just remember to vacuum the cracks by using the brush attachment.

Getting Rid of Odors

Daily use, children, and pets can leave the mattress smelling stuffy. You can deodorize it by using baking soda and vacuuming it. Start by unfolding the mattress and lay it flat on the floor.

Vacuum the mattress with the brush attachment to take away any free particles and dander. After this, sprinkle some baking soda on the mattress and let it settle for half an hour to take in all odors.

Once the 30 minutes is up, vacuum the baking soda and make sure that you have removed all traces of it on the mattress. Flip the mattress over and repeat the process.

Get Rid of Mold

If you noticed mold growth on the mattress, it is best to use rubbing alcohol thinned with water. The alcohol will destroy the mold spores and it will also aid in cleaning the area.

The mold that grew on the mattress may have come from moisture like water, perspiration or urine. Covering the mattress with a futon cover will keep it from happening.

Futon covers are usually made up of thicker material compared to bed sheets. They are machine-washable too.

In between cleaning and airing the futon, you have to rotate the mattress at times regardless if you are using it as a sofa or a bed. Flip and rotate the mattress for even wearing. This allows for longer use.

Do not forget to wipe down the frame too. Remove traces of dust and grime on the item with a clean cloth or rag. Now that you know the basics on how to clean futon mattress, if you do it regularly and act quickly whenever spills happen, you can have a mattress that will provide good service for a longer time.
